Large and Heavy Wood Rocking Chair

This chair belongs to a friend who inherited it when her mother passed away about 12 years ago. I'm trying to help her find out more about it. There is a number "23" stamped on the bottom, but no other markings that can help identify its origin. I'd love some thoughts and opinions!
