I found this cool brooch and as you can see there is an opening in the top. Not sure if this brooch was meant to hold something and if so what? It measures about 2" long y 1.75" wide. It's a puzzle to me. Thanks for any help!

Could be for flowers? One could pin the brooch with the flowers on a lapel.
