A couple of other well known barbed wire inventors observed his creation and came up with ideas of their own and the rest is history. They were Isaac Ellwood and Joseph Glidden. The third photo is a 1970s replica of the patent model submitted to the Patent Office. It was highlighted during the "Mole Man" episode of "American Pickers". I acquired it from the owner in Illinois. The original patent model is located in the Illinois State Museum (photo on right).
