I purchased this item at an auction in Southern IL. What is this item called? What is it used for? How old is it? Please accept my thanks in advance for your help.

Taking a wild guess: looks like heat diffuser used on top of a stove. A pan is placed on it and the diffuser keeps the food from scorching. 1940s/1950s perhaps.

I looks as though it is possibly supposed to come apart. I used the third photo to show what I thought might be a latch of some type. I didn't try too much pressure because I didn't want to damage it. When I google heat diffuser images I do find many that look like my item. Thanks much.
