No markings on this antique cane handle. Inscribed to my grandfather from his mother... or my great grand father from his mother. Very rich color gold... wondering if it is solid or plated.

thank you.... that tells me that the inscription was to my great grandfather who was the son of WY Atkinson, governor of Georgia in the late 1800's.... and not my grandfather.... how can I find out more about the handle... is is gold or gold plated? Who made it?
