Recently was given this tool by a close friend. He purchased as a barb wire fence stretcher. I don't feel that is accurate. Can any of you shed some light on what this might be?
30.5" in length. Only mark is a patent date, reads 1895 Jan as best as I can tell.
    Thank you.

It almost looks like a trap to me, maybe with a part missing...don't know.

Finally, got to the bottom of it! It's a barb wire stretcher for sure. I found one a little like it, later date, 1905 or so. You place on the pole 90 degrees from the wire, grab the wire both sides of the pole and bring the handle down to tighten the wire. When at the right tension you set the smaller handle with "y" against the pole to hold in place so you can hammer staples in both sides over wire.

looks like it could be used to stretch sheep fence.
