My Basket is 8" Tall X 13" Diameter . I'm not sure about the materials they used 3 different types of colors . The top rim and bottom bottom of the basket is a golden color and the stripes are brown and tan . I Bought it @ an Antique store a wile ago . It's one of my favorites baskets . I like the design and size . It seems to have some wear inside . They are some little microscopic holes in some areas . oder wise is in good shape . I wish I new more about it .
The basket is African, from Botswana. The small circular start in the bottom is a key identifying feature of these African baskets, which are often mistaken for Native American Indian. They are made from coiled and dyed palm fiber, unlike the Indian baskets that they resemble, which would be made from willow, sumac, or other materials found locally.
It probably dates to the 1970/80s. These began showing up on the west coast (and possibly elsewhere) at antiques stores about that time, when several truck-loads came through, with drivers who stopped at small shops and stores, selling the baskets to shop owners, who recognized that they were well-made and attractive, but who were not specialists in Native American basketry. Most of the baskets later appeared on the market, misidentifed as Indian. And they are still out there, at antiques shops, antiques shows and flea markets, and on line.
Baskets from Botswana have been imported for years since, but this particular style, with the relatively small coils and tall, slightly flaring form, seems to have been primarily made during that 1970/1980s time period.
