    I found this object at a abandoned landfill and cannot figure out what it is.
    it says "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA"
    Does anybody know what it is?
    I believe its part of something.

      I have no idea what it is off from, but it looks like a very old style potentiometer. The coil acts as a resistor and when you turn the knob, it should sweep across the coil. The one connector should be fixed so it doesn't move and when the sweeper slides away from it, the resistance becomes higher.
