Can't see the bottom of this one so don't know if it is like mine. Mine has a tip door in the bottom to empty ash. It would be put in a fireplace over a kindling wood fire and the basket filled with coal. When you light the kindling fire it in turn ignited the coal which would burn longer through the night to keep some degree of warmth. Long ago they were common up north but are getting difficult to find now days. People who have them now seem to use them for decorative planters etc.
