Mudman?

I picked this guy up at auction recently. I seem to have come across a few Asian things lately and I know absolutely nothing about them but I love them. This figurine is about 45cm/18 inches tall without the cherry wood stand. He has holes in his eyes. If anyone can tell me anything about him I'd appreciate it. I bought another one at the same auction, he is taller and I'll put him up soon.
