My mother made this cross stitch quilt. She must have had it dry cleaned and then it's been hanging in a closet for many years. Unfortunately it has "yellowed" and has yellowing on the fold lines. Is there any way to remove all the stains? I remember her sewing on this for years...now ashamed to see it's state. Any help???

It is made of cotton material and they were meant to be washed . I have washed antique quilts with no problem . If you are afraid of washing machine fill bathtub and let it soak ,rinse and then you will need to carefully press it between towels to get out as much water and then hang on clothes line , Very beautiful !

I have also laid one across chairs outside and washed with a hose :-)

Thanks for your suggestions. Not sure that regular washing will remove yellowing, so didn't know if there is some special detergent I should use (not bleach as I don't want the blue faded). Maybe I'm best to just leave as is.

Is yellowing from cigarette smoke ? Your safest way is to dry cleaner and store folded and laid down in a cedar chest not on a hanger .
