      It may have been a part of a Victorian ladies' watch fob. The longer chain looks like it may have been original to the piece.dies the end look broken or like something (such as the clip to hold a ladies' watch) has been removed.
      I very seriously doubt it would have been a book mark.
      Can you make another picture with it straightened out- especially where the decorative part and the chain comes together? And measure all the chain pieces. It's very interesting but hard to assess as pictured.

      Look like the Roman soldier head glass or stone intaglio pendant on a chain, the chain link style is 20th century I believe. So probably a necklace, easy to repair. An antique book mark chain would have a wider and flatter surface. These could be Italian.
