That's great info about the position of the stamps having a special coded message!
There was a special telephone code that I recall hearing my family talk about doing: Long distance phone calls were expensive and special- you didn't just call to chit-chat. Relatives who were visiting my family were always told to call when they arrived home so we would know they got there safely. But they would have the operator make the call a "person-to-person" call which meant that only the named person could take the call; if that person was not there to talk, there would be no charge for the attempted call. So the conspiring guests and hosts would make up a phony name to ask for.
When the call finally came in for the phony-named person, the hosts would know their guests got home safely- and the long distance call would not be charged to them. I remember that being done a few times at my grandparents' house back in the 1950s.
