A mixture of paint, stitchery and applique. It's stunning. The stitchery is awesome. Perhaps the face, with the head of branches and leaves, is a mask. The brown tree surrounding the figure is reminiscent of native/indigenous shapes. The mask/face maybe African? Though that doesn't rule out an indigenous people. Again, perhaps, the blue cloak-like area, is meant to represent a stream, or river?

I'm all perhaps-es, maybes, with no facts to back me up. I do know that the Cardinal is considered a messenger from the "Great Spirit".
