I love this piece. I’ve spent hours attempting to identify period or even if it’s a desk- vanity- or washstand. Difficult when the top half is missing! The front two legs , I believe are hand crafted they are not identical to one another. I’ve been trying to identify leg shape but cant find anything online similar.
I believe it’s quarter sewn oak - it’s hard- maybe golden oak that was refinished darker and stenciled?
    I surrender! Lol

A washstand usually had a cupboard below maybe to store a jug. I don't really see a washstand here.

For my 2 cents, I think this has seen a bunch of rework. I don't think the top is original nor do I think it is any form of Oak. The picture is a bit blurry when blown up but regardless the grain of the top is way to tight for Oak. Without better picture it is a guess but it looks more like hard curly maple. There is quite a difference in curly maple grain and hard curly maple grain veining. I would venture to say this was an old piece when originally made but looks modified to me. That could also explain the differences in the legs. Replacements never match the originals perfectly.

Thank- you. I agree with the modification thoughts....and the tiger maple also is what I was thinking for a long time. The top is beautiful though. I guess I’ll go with Frankenstein’s vanity! Ha ha

Made in the country by the local carpenter who hadn't brass handles so he made wood ones. At least they look like wood on your photo. Late 19th century or early 20th century.

Rustic provençal french would be my first guess. Do the knobs go through the front of the drawer, or are they applied/pegged & glued to the front? Meaning is there any sign of the knobs from the inside face of the drawer?
