Wooden object cylinder shape with hinge and metal lined, hollow from end to end being able to see through it. Measures 5 7/8" tall x 2" diameter. I have done a number of searches with no luck identifying. Would love to know what this is just out of curiosity. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the info fhrjr2. I forgot to mention that you can see through it. In other words its hollow from end to end. Not sure how it would snuff out fire from cigar. Is it missing parts?

Is there a round metal insert in the bottom? The bottom shouldn't be just wood. They opened to empty them. I haven't seen one since I was a kid but I believe that is what you have. Does the black top end smell like smoke?

No it don't smell of smoke. It's kinda cone shaped on the inside and open at both ends.

It is metal lined in the long part.

Sure has my curiosity up & running. May pick-up a Cuban tomorrow, even though I quit smoking (tobac) 20 yrs. ago. Describing this to a French shop keeper is really going to tax my French ! LOL !

Thanks for the interest folks, I appreciate it. Hopefully someone will see this and know exactly what it is and what it was used for.
It reminds me of a telescope, without a lens of course.

Here is a vintage one similar to yours but without the drop down clean out. This one you simply scrape and tap to empty. This is one that sold on eBay a couple days ago.

You guys know more than I do for sure, and so far that seems to be the best guess Mr. fhrjr2, but I'm still not convinced it's a cigar snuffer. If the hole was not in the other end it surely would make a good snuffer. That's the thing right there that makes me doubt.

I am still looking for the matching snuffer. There should be a round metal disk with a rod in the center that fits in the bottom. The rod would go down into the hole in the base. To clean it you simply opened it and used your cleaning tool to push the disk out along with the ash residue. There is another name for these but I can't seem to bring it to mind. They used to be sold as a kit with two different scraping tools. Back when I was a kid it was more common for people to smoke pipes and cigars rather than cigarettes and drugs.

I think you've probably hit the nail right on the head there mr. fhrjr2. If you find the matching snuffer then I'd appreciate you giving me nudge. I have another post that I'd like for you to look at and make a comment on. For some reason I think you'll know exactly what it is. Thanks for you're interest so far here on this post. I do appreciate very much.
