Before keramikos needs to go searching for more old-timey Hot Springs history -- The Buckstaff is *absolutely* still right there on Central Avenue where its been since 1912 -- also the only one remaining on Bathhouse Row which remains in operation as such to this day!
I've (just once) had the opportunity to "take the baths" there -- what an incredibly luxurious and relaxing way to spend ~3hrs...?!! :-) :-) :-)
Vynil, Well said!!! That kind of thinking IS hard to cure but the people have to want to be cured; I’m afraid some prefer to stay sick. {:-(

Keramikos, I too noticed that 'now uncomfortable' selling point. I would tend to guess you are absolutely correct in your estimation. It probably also bears pointing out that the Buckstaff was then (and is now) the most "prestigious" (read: fanciest) amongst its four other neighbors on Bathhouse Row, no doubt also why it remains preserved 'in operation' while its neighbors are amidst varying processes of "re-purposing".
I *can* (again) absolutely testify to the spectacular-ness of the place...all its various masonry/tile/plumbing/glass/other decoration truly still is a 'step back in time' just to look at -- not to mention the experience of the 'spa treatment' itself.
Which services, for the record when I did it ~20 yrs or so, were all administered exclusively by a number of exceptionally skilled black men, many of whom were likely grandfathers in their own families, and all of which seemingly long time employees well practiced in their careers.
There's probably some "commentary on today's society" in there somewhere...I just hope it's a good one overall... ?

Somethings I can’t believe happened and

I grew up in New Orleans and I traveled all around the south extensively
From the late 60s on family vacations when I was a kid to the present
I hitchhiked all through the south and the country from the 70s to the 80s
And I vacationed as I got older to the 90s to the teens ...
And I have never seen or been in a place where anything was said about breaking glasses ,,,, so it didn’t happen in the world I traveled
Maybe it’s something that happened in the restaurant busboys circle
But I do remember asking my mother
when I saw the third door

Yes I was sheltered but then in the 60s we all went to school together
The teacher let us bring our records to play on Friday
The African-American kids would bring the Temptations
James Brown Ray Charles and the White kids
Arch-cheese and the 1910 fruit gum company
And the Partridge family

SO many good points made, and indeed how completely different "things" have become since then. Once more, I can only hope that history might somehow look kindly upon us eventually, though current daily news tends to often suggest otherwise...maybe that in itself isn't a 'new' phenomenon either...?
