I recently opened a box containing 5 mid-century(?) Madame Alexander Little Women dolls. There was a strong smell of acetic acid or vinegar. I think that is from the plastic breaking down. Is there any way to get rid of the smell and prevent it coming back?

That is the hard plastic breaking down I call it decomposing since that smell is dreadful . It happened to some hard plastic dolls and not others. There is nothing that will make odor go away and stay away . To bad :-( Some people choose to keep them and try all kinds of remedies to take way odor but there is no cure , I actually throw away dolls like that and some were wonderful but you don't want her around your other hard plastic dolls either .
