    Interested to establish origins or the item. The mark is surrounded by trade mark London but I can’t make out anything from the mark itself. Any help appreciated

      It's a orienting or protracting compass. You place it on a map with the compass north aligned with the map cardinal point north. You set the movable pointer to the direction you want travel on the map. You orient your compass to north with the needle facing north. Then just follow the pointer for your path. I had Boy Scout compass with a clear plastic base that served the same function as the pointer on this.
