This little jar is about 4.25" high x 4" diameter, NIB. It has a ground and polished top, acid etched maker's mark, hand etched flowers and decorations on all sides, some literature, original packing material and a mass produced wooden "tomobako". These wooden boxes do seem to be a bit uncommon. I could find only one other example.
The seller had no idea what it is for, nor do I. He guessed might be for potpourri, but it seems that it would be awkward to use it for that purpose. I don't have any Hoya in my collection and was waiting to find something in a thrift shop as Hoya crystal is crazy expensive, but until the zombie apocalypse ends, I was thwarted, so I took a look for the cheapest piece of Hoya I could find and this was only $12, but pretty good bang for my buck, so here we are! Does anyone know what this is for? It has a part number on the box, but Google failed me in this instance. Hoya stopped producing crystal in 2009, so this probably dates to 1980s-2009... April budget item #4.
