I believe it is a railroad shipping crate from Goodyear. It says Goodyear Square Deal Rubber co. It contained a boy's shoes. 27 x 18 13. I posted this a few years ago but have not been able to find any more about this since. I would appreciate any information about this. The newspaper that lines it is from 1967.

I looked for awhile. Didn't see much. Maybe kera can look up some patents..

Thanks, I'll look into that. I've been looking for 2 years and have not found anything. It's an interesting piece.

      Kera found the patent information..

      https://uspto.report/TM/71303328

Looks like goodyear patented it in 1930..

Is this YOU under another username?

Japan2023, Indeed, if the shipping container in the other post is the same one, it's full of leads.

Just from the stamped information that I can make out on the various sides (that I think I can make it out, anyway):

      GOODYEAR
      SQUARE DEAL
      TRADEMARK
      REGISTERED
      RUBBER CO.
      STANDARD RAILROAD CONTAINER

      TEMPEST
      GOODYEAR
      TRADEMARK
      REGISTERED
      RUBBER CO.

      BRITISH

      24 LBS
      2.5 TO 6

      GOODYEAR RUBBER CO.
      MILWAUKEE
      WIS

So, yes, "SQUARE DEAL" was a trademarked name registered by Goodyear, and the trademark listing at USPTO is full of useful information:

      *snip*

      1930-04-16 Date of First Use
      1930-11-25 Trademark Registered

      REGISTERED AND RENEWED (SECOND RENEWAL - 20 YRS) 1970-11-25 1 REN2 R:Renewal
      EXPIRED SEC. 9 1992-11-03 2 EXRG O:Outgoing Correspondence

      GS0391 RUBBER BOOTS AND SHOES

      *snip*

      https://uspto.report/TM/71303328

First used in April 1930, and Goodyear seems to have thought it important enough to reregister it twice.

Goodyear started making rubber soles and heels in 1905:

      https://goodyearfootwear.com/history/

I'm inclined to think that the boys' footwear in the shipping container was boots, because of the word TEMPEST:

      https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tempest

You'd want boots in seriously bad weather.

I don't know if the "2.5 TO 6" is a size range. Boys' size size 6 in modern shoes would be close to a womens' size 8:

      https://www.blitzresults.com/en/childrens-shoe-size-boys/#chart-boy

Then again, U.S. shoe sizes could have changed since 1930. Consistency has never been a virtue of U.S. sizing.

As to "MILWAUKEE WIS," perhaps this was a shipping destination.

      However, "BRITISH" is puzzling.

Yes, I did post this about 2 years ago. Didn't get too much feedback. Beyond thrilled to get this much information this time. I've had it for over 15 years and always wondered about its history. I'll see what my next step will be.
