I realize this isn’t a jazz cover, but, hear me out! My dad bartended at SF Jazz Club El Matador in the 1950s, often housing musicians or taking them to the airport. There is a signature on it that reads “From Earl.” Thinking Earl Hines, tho he never doodled. Thinking it might have been an illustrator for jazz record covers, another jazz Earl I don’t know who doodled, or some beat poet. Thinking the artist might be on the right, who seems to like animals. It’s too good a doodle to pass up, not to mention the mystery Earl. Any suggestions? It’s in a copy of The Naked and the Dead, by Norman Mailer, but it’s not his doodle. Dad also knew jazz artists in Paris about this time, but that’s a stretch.
