Clark Thread Co. was founded in 1812 by Patrick Clark, who invented a way of twisting cotton together to substitute for silk that was unavailable due to the French blockade of Great Britain. The company began manufacturing in Newark, New Jersey, U.S. in 18641. In 1959, J & P Coats and the Clark Thread Co. merged to become Coats & Clark Inc. The company was founded by William Clark in 1892, and its principal facilities were in Trenton, New Jersey.
