I bought this lot of 12 pin backs, because I spotted the "OH YOU CUBS" figuring it was Baseball related. I was right !
Turns out these were premiums that were given out with each pack of cigarettes bought.
Oh, You....." was a common phrase of the day used in the sports section of newspapers, particularly starting, and after the 1908 season. Whitehead & Hoag issued buttons that read; "Oh! You Cubs," "Oh, you Giants," and "Oh you Pirates." All three teams that were involved in the most exciting and dramatic pennant race in baseball history. The Cubs, Giants, and Pirates battled throughout the 1908 season, which ended with the three teams separated by only one game in the standings.
The infamous "Merkle's Boner;" the notorious base-running mistake committed by rookie Fred Merkle of the New York Giants in a game against the Chicago Cubs on September 23, 1908, led to a one game play-off, which enabled the Cubs to win the National League pennant.
