found in the goldfields victoria australia 10 years ago. just thought to examine it again. seems like a hallmark in the center. can anybody identify the mark. looks like a lion if i use my imagination. doubt that is what it is. says troy so would be possibly used to assay the gold.
    any ideas?

AI is telling me: The object in the image is a metal mortar, likely made of brass or bronze, with the inscriptions "TROY" and "19 OZ" on the rim.

Material and Inscriptions: The mortar is made of metal, likely brass or bronze given its color and texture. The words "TROY" and "19 OZ" are engraved on the rim.

Meaning of "Troy": "Troy" likely refers to the troy ounce, a unit of measure traditionally used for weighing precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum. One troy ounce is approximately 31.1 grams.

Meaning of "19 OZ": The inscription "19 OZ" likely indicates the weight of the mortar itself in troy ounces, or possibly a capacity, although the former is more likely given the context of the "troy" designation.

Uses: Although mortars are often used in cooking or apothecary settings, the troy ounce designation suggests that this particular example may have been a standardized weight or measuring vessel used in trade or for weighing precious metals or other valuable materials.

thanks. it actually says 12 oz. and it weighs 13.1 oz on my scale which is what it tells me is the difference between our oz and troy oz which is used with gold and silver.
