This is a vase by Hannosuke: Makuzu Kozan II (1859-1940)
“In the early 1880s, Toranosuke gave the control of the kiln to Hannosuke (Hanzan) so he would be able to experiment and try new styles, materials, forms, and glazes. He worked too on solving some economic problems that started in 1876 when his kiln burned and destroyed great quantities of his works, but continued working very close with his adopted son and nephew until he died at the age of 74 in 1916. In the 1880s their style changed from earthenwares to brightly colored porcelains with underglaze. Hanzan was appointed Imperial Household Artist in 1896 and was the second only to receive this honor after Seifu Yohei III.
In 1912, Hanzan got total authority of the kiln. He got the title of Makuzu Kozan II one year later after
He got some inspiration with the Chinese monochromatic wares of the Qing Dynasty and from the Danish Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory. Hanzan died in 1940 at the age of 82.
The marks of his pieces in general are in underglaze blue that recall the Imperial Chinese reign marks for the Kangxi period (1662-1722). They are often surrounded by square, double square, circle or slip relief”.
