This gilded plaster cast of a bronze medal by Abraham Dupré (1604-1647) is a flea market find. The gilding is by yours truly. Diam. 10.6 cm. The seller was a descendant of the Danish sculptor Einar Utzon-Frank (1888-1955) and told me that the casting once was part of the sculptor's collection of art objects. Who we see is Christine of France (1606-1663). Duchess of Savoy. Queen of Cyprus. At a time when only a minority could read and write, misspellings might occur. She had eight children and when her husband died, she ruled for her sons. She was strong, ambitious and frivolous. Three of her lovers are known. 'Grab what you can and have fun while doing so' could be the headline for her life.
