Emmy Lou was a pal of Diego and Freida's and one of San Francisco's most colorful characters. (She lived well for a Communist and we often ran into each other at some quite stylish parties about town).

Her work, and her living self, conveyed rich passions. Without making an egoistic parade of them, her sensibilities came through to show us the joy of the singing bird, the beauty and innocence of children, and the weight of oppression upon the laboring masses.

Here in this piece there is a light from above, and that which grows from the earth is lifting upward. And the bird, who lives in both elements of earth and sky, rejoices.
