The Gerson Elec. Mfg Co was in business in Phila, for ~ 1894 - 1897. There are several ads showing several different style phones they sold, including a very unusual candlestick, but this is the ONLY know example of an original GERSON phone. Note company name embossed in wood on the front in 2 places.

You say ''embossed,'' but it would be very difficult to do that on wood. Did you mean debossed, as in the letters are sunken into the wood? The only real way to emboss it would be through veneer that has been stamped, but that would likely damage the wood. Or maybe it's just been burned into the wood, neither em- nor debossed?
