I looked at my father's medals today, He retired a Colonel, Army reserves. I was kind of surprised to see his combat infantry badge from WW-2 is sterling silver, I was enlisted (drafted) 2 years Vietnam, and received a combat infantry badge, looks similar, but of course it is not sterling, as I guess Officers get even better medals, than enlisted men, even if they are same medal. I do not care, I did not like war. But now happy I have a few of these sterling CIB"s, and a few that are not sterling.

It wasn't the rank, it was the era.

Agree with chris-- mine have not been sterling either.

Of course, any soldier is free to purchase an upgrade at the PX-- the staybright versions are popular.

I received the EIB in 1962 and It's not sterling. The sterling has a rich color tone then the silver filled issued later.
