Not a crock person, but this thing was too beautiful not to buy! The only thing I found bad is a small chip on one of the handles. I've heard of redwing and western but not monmouth? Anyway just wanted to share!

Monmouth, Macomb, Weir Pottery,as well as several other potteries merged in the 1900's to form Western Stoneware of Monmouth,Illinois. Monmouth started in 1893

Thanks Mary, that make sense. So this would place the crock as pre-western, early 1900?

I have a very similar 2-gallon one that I got about a year ago & researched at the time. It kept an ebay listing for ref which had said: "GARDEN CITY POTTERY CO., San Jose, Cal - 2 gallon CROCK. It is a wonderful piece of California pottery. Garden City pottery was in production from 1902-1979." It was also my understanding that at one time when you would large plants or small trees from a nursery – they would come in these crocks. (If true – I wish they still did!) Perhaps this gives you a little more timeline info too ... it's great!
