In 1912, Walter Sheaffer, a Iowa jeweler, founded the Sheaffer Pen Company based on an innovation eliminating the need to use an eye dropper to fill fountain pens. In 1920 the company introduced its successful premium-priced “lifetime” pen, which guaranteed the gold nib for the life of the owner. And in 1924 Sheaffer introduced its signature white dot, plus a best-selling line of jade green pens using a new plastic resin called Radite.
In the mid-1880s, several craftsmen made improvements which resulted in the first reliable fountain pens, and companies began producing highly elaborate models, some of which are now collectible. Get to know this category before buying - there are many modern, limited editions sold for high prices today, but they’re not vintage. Key early names include Montblanc, Parker, and Waterman.
