I found this item in a drawer after a relative passed away. Does anyone know what it is used for? It is about the size of a pen and has a pocket clip attached. The "barrel" is spring loaded and slides up and down. When it slides up the backside of the barb shaped tip seems to be sharp for some purpose. Thank you.

What did the relative do for a living?

He was a high school principal. He was also an avid fisherman and did some gunsmithing as a hobby. I believe it would be the Korean War when he was a radio operator. Those are the most likely occupations that the item may be used in if we use his history to help determine. Thanks for helping figure this out.

I'm sure somebody out there knows exactly what this is. The pocket clip suggests that it was used somewhat frequently, probably by itself, so it had to be kept close-at-hand, ready when needed and not stored in a tool box.
      Hmm . . .

a helpful clue maybe is it's composition.....it appears to be all brass except for the pocket clip which I am guessing was replaced at some point in time as it appears to be newer than the tool itself. All brass and solid/heavy for its size.

      I think it's a fish hook remover.
