Edit: I've uploaded more photographs. This tool is steel and has a fine edge with plenty of material at the heart of the steel blade so we don't see it as a glass making tool my colleague is actually a glass maker and ceramicist and he ruled that out.
We can't find out what this was used for. The original owner doesn't know either. He was a greenwood worker for many decades mostly doing pole lathe work but this doesn't seem to be a turning tool. Does any of the collective mind here have any ideas, or indeed know what it is? He has retired from the work but will be delighted to find out its true use. Thanks for looking!
bobby725. Not a garden tool it has bevels each side and has a diamond cross section with both edges sharp. I'll do more pictures
I don't see a makers mark but it is fashioned as a Scottish Dirk letter opener.
I saw a similar tool online..it was used for stucco I believe. I'll see if I can find the link

Thanks for the suggestions. I've ruled out the reamer and also the stucco chaser, which would have a cranked handle and be predominantly made from a metal plate riveted or welded to a crank tang with a wooden handle. This is a parallel sided tool with a very defined fine bevel ending in a sharpened edge. It is a cutting tool of some description but the double edge and fine point and bevel has us beat just now.

Tall Cakes. Interesting, but really unlikely as both edges are really sharp and it was used as an edge tool. It would be difficult to throw this double edged tool and not cut oneself!
Would make a really nice prison shank.
bobby752, yes,I get that but the edges are fine and wouldn't stand up to much wear when used as a reamer though. The angle also makes me wonder what it would be best for if used as a reamer? I agree, the double edge is puzzling.

Yes I did, thanks. It looks nothing like those, my friend,a glass maker, said it isn't one of those, and it is made of step with a five cutting edge whereas those you posted have a thick square edge and are one thickness across their width and we made of brass or an alloy as I explained in my earlier reply. I don't know .you have the object in your hands. Were all just looking at a picture. And obviously those are modern reamers, your piece looks older.

Not sure what you're saying here? Doesn't look like that in the side picture? It looks beveled to an edge like most tools?

Typo nightmare! Steel with a fine cutting edge. I wish I could upload a video, it would help us all. I looked at the glass reamer, it's nothing like that and by glass maker friend has ruled it out, also it's steel, not brass. Can I upload video?

My thought is, it was used to cut a slot in something(maybe fabric or a curtain)? Of course someone could've made this from another tool.
If homemade (which is possible) it may have been used for trimming inlay work or even as a type of plunge dagger which is right for the blade but handle is wrong usually. See the link below.
