I've seen these every now and again - usually in really good collections of Mexican pottery, but this is the first i've found for sale. I don't know anything about them, but i'm curious. the Back has signed very large R de do Oaxaca. not sure what to make of that either.

I like it! It's very unusual and colourful- reminds me of a lot of Aztec type carvings you see.

One doesn't often find them for sale these days (I know, since it's one of the things I collect!)

It's called a "Mezcal monkey," or "Chongo Mezcalero," a type of clay bottle made in Oaxaca, that contained mezcal.

Here's a good website containing more information, and background, of this folk art: https://www.mexconnect.com/articles/3594-mexico-s-mezcal-monkey-collectible-ceramic-folk-art-from-oaxaca/
