Hi!!! I came upon this item recently and bought it because it was just so unusual but it is driving me nuts as to what it is! What was it used for? I think it may be trench art because the bottom is made out of an 1898 10 Centavos from Argentina. Any ideas? Thanks so much!!!
My first thought was holy water sprinkler! That's far from my area of knowledge though.

This is called a bombilla, its a South American (hence the centavo) straw-device that's used to drink Yerba Mate out of a gourd. Most of them a nickel-silver (alpaca). Yerba Mate is an herbal tea that's like the coffee of South America. Its actually very tasty, very strange mix of alkaloids in it that gives you a great buzz that's much better than coffee. No jitters or burnout. Used to drink it all the time.
Lots of people all over the world all throughout history have used coins to make things, not just soldiers in battle.
