A lot of thought went into the design of this barbed warning strip for fences. The wire shown is a slight variation of patent no. 234,080, November 2, 1880, by Thomas Shuman, of Corning, Iowa. One half of the patent was assigned to George A. Morse, of Corning, Iowa. The strip is provided with four barbs in the middle pointing in opposite directions.
I've never seen a complete fence of this wire, only the type shown. A complete fence would be quite impressive. The unique design of the fence served to tighten the wires. Patent no. 211,349 was designed so that cattle might rub against the fence without being injured; but when an attempt is made to force their way through the fence the barbs projecting between the wires would be effective deterrents.
