Could it be baklite? Doesnt really sound clunky enough.. Simichrome will arrive in the mail soon and i can test.

Markets and yard sales take up many weekends for me as well.
Good fun ay although my kids arn't as keen.. I have discoverd the eco shop which is like a huge thrift shop. Each night they put there new stock on the shelves so you need to be in line before opening at 9am to get the treasures
Not Bakelite - might be Lucite or simply plastic. If there are seams on the beads, then it's plastic. What does the clasp look like? (best to show the entire piece in a photo). More than one photo would also be helpful.
