I have decided to let Keen Kutter slide for a little while and move on to coins. I will post one U.S. coin daily throughout the workweek. The coin featured in today's post is none other than the 1801 Large Cent. (By the way, this is just an example image, but depicts the actual coin.) This coin is different from normal 1801 Large Cents due to having THREE errors on the same side, in the same area, shown by the red arrows.

The first is the obvious fraction of 1/000. Why this die was prepared like this is a million dollar question. (A coin worth 1/000 cents, practically worthless.) This is not worth that amount today, nor was it back then. It was a mysterious error that is somewhat humorous and weird.

Next, we have a stem missing from the wreath. This is an error because the wreath either had 2 stems or was simply "stemless". Only one stem is found on this coin.

The last error is the misspelling of the word United. In this case i'm assuming, the polisher accidentally rubbed the coin a little too hard and damaged the die, causing it to look like IInited instead of United. This is obviously the rarest of the 1801 cents.

By the way, the 1/000 fraction error somehow was produced again in 1802 AND 1803.
