I think this pin has been repaired with glue at some point. The rope looking piece is plastic. I think it might have been a button at one time. I couldn’t get it in the pictures but inside the glue you can barely see the end of the pin & it looks like something broke off. I assume the owner at the time did a DIY fix up job. Not a bad idea.
I collect vintage buttons--yes yours is a button. c 1900, in Brass.
PostCardCollector, it feels like plastic though.
