    early measuring device. Does anyone know what it was used for? measures about probably 1700'S or 1800's , Hardwood and brass construction. Measures about 3' long overall.

      Looks like a black powder fouling scraper to me but the numbering I don't know. Maybe Blunder will check in on this one. Just my guess.

      It is a "board measure." You hook the end onto the side of a board (like using the tab at the end of a modern tape measure) and by reading the numbers (if you know how to do it) you can calculate the number of "board feet" - the unit by which lumber is sold - in the board.
