I think it's a 1940's or so, Jeep gas can. The x on the side is a design that Jeep used on the taillights of it's newer Jeeps also! :^)

Here's a link talking about the Jeep Renegade taillights, I don't know if it says that the old gas can is where Jeep got the idea for the x but it's just what I heard! :^)

These were/are also known as "jerry cans", but I don't know why...?
    6. billretirecoll billretirecoll, 6 years ago
      Here's Wikipedia's definition! :^)

This is the history of the Jerrycan from Wikipedia, from the link above:

The history of the jerrycan is notable because the German design was reverse engineered and subsequently copied, with minor modifications,[clarification needed] by the Allies during the Second World War. The name of the jerrycan refers to its German origins, Jerry being wartime slang for Germans.[3

      I hope this helps! :^)

If you look on the bottom of your fuel can, you will likely find a manufacturers name and year of manufacture. Various US manufacturers made them for the military, and they continued to use/manufacture these well after WWII.
