The other day I went to an estate sale and bought a box lot of dolls that were labeled as various souvenir dolls. This one caught my eye right away when I got home and started going through them. He? is made out of wood and appears to be hand carved and painted. It’s about 10 inches tall and 3 inches wide. Does anyone know where it came from and what country? Is it actually considered a doll? I love it’s expression and just want to know more of the origin. Thank you.

Thanks fortapache! I am relatively new to this site and appreciate your constant support. I thought that this site would be a good distraction as I have been recently diagnosed with cancer but it seems more like a one-upper and who is the expert situation. Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn...this is not the Smithsonian and if you (certain people) need to go on and on and on then get your own website. It is a shame that others don’t speak up to the bullying. But that is my opinion and guess what I have one!!

This one is interesting! I think it's female because of the skirt, head wrap, bead necklace, possibly earrings and long eyelashes.
This one also may have been used as a character in a play....I'm thinking of the little plays put on for a small group of children (or adults) where the set is small, the characters are moved about by wat of long dowels by someone behind the curtain who also provides the voice for the characters.
There must have been story to explain how the nicely dressed lady winds up with something black across her face. And that expression!! Eyes popping out and enormous smile! Maybe she's seeing some handsome fella but doesn't know she just got coal dust all over her face!
Ok, you see I could just make up the play myself- but I think you should delve into puppet characters controlled by pushing with dowels (not the kind controlled with strings from above).
Hope this sends you in the right direction.

Thanks Watchsearcher! I would have never thought about that. Thanks for guiding me closer to figuring it out.
