Here’s a charming watercolor ... can anyone translate the German at the bottom? (Online translation only gave me “When I think of home...” I’m not certain even that much of the translation is correct.) ALSO the artist signature/ monogram is clearly written but I can’t figure out the letters, what do you think the artist’s name is? Thanks everyone!

Brunswick, For what it's worth. };-)

Google Translate did a pretty miserable job, probably because it's not high German, but rather the Cologne dialect. Still, I found its failure with what seems like obvious things like "Muttersproch," which would seem pretty understandable as Muttersprache or Mother Tongue, sad.

Here's what strikes me as a reasonable interpretation:

      Homesickness for Cologne

I was born in Cologne near the Rhine,
I have, and that is on my mind,
Not yet lost my mother tongue,
That is something I am proud of.

      (refrain)
When I'm thinking of my homeland
And I see the Cathedral standing in front of me
      ||:I would immediately like to be homeward bound,
I would like to walk by foot to Cologne. :||

I have sung so many times about the Rhine,
      About our beautiful, German river,
So German like my songs sounded here,
So German stays Cologne with it's Cathedral.

      (refrain)

And if one day the Lord should call me,
      I'll tell Saint Peter:
      "I can tell you remorseful
      That I yearn for Cologne."

      (refrain)

And when one day, I look down on my
      Hometown from the heavens above,
I want to whisper up there
How much I love you, my Cologne.

Wow everyone ... thanks all for your info! The painting has a lot of wonderful meaning, I’m grateful to know about it. (It pays to look in the dark corners of antique store basements!) I just cleaned it and overlayed a clean white matte. Did anyone notice the marker at his feet? 337? THANKS AGAIN.
