Mid Century Modern Pewter Covered Container - Mystery Mark

I purchased this vintage modern Pewter container at a local estate sale. The estate owner had traveled widely and her possessions included items from places as diverse as Alaska, Scandinavia and Latin America. Very skillfully and aesthetically hand crafted, I am curious as to the artisan and country of origin. Instinctively I feel it may be from Scandinavia (Norway?) - it is impress marked as shown in the photo but I cannot make out the characters - possibly stylized letters or also possibly Asian characters (Kanji) - the form also suggests Japan. It measures about 4" across. Would welcome any/all views. Thanks
