Feeding wild birds rapidly grew in popularity around the end of the 19th century. Hanging feeders began to replace table or pedestal mounted trays as a preferred method.
This is a rare Art Nouveau style copper and glass bird feeder. The hanger and bottom portion are cast and wrought iron. The opening in the top for adding food is capped. Early 20th C. Height 23” Diameter 14”. Two dents in rim of widest part of top. Catch pan has rusted bottom.
I believe this was designed or influenced by Hans Berlepsch, a Swiss architect & designer, who created an early Art Nouveau, “bird bell” style feeder. (1910) The feeder pictured here is made of copper, glass, & cast iron. There is absolutely no indication that this is a re-purposed lantern or street light.
I can find no comparable examples by searching the Internet.
I would really love to know more about this item.
