Tray or Dish and what use does it have

Hi,
I have purchased an auction lot of old EPNS and came across this lovely dish/tray.
It has the JS and S mark with the beaver and possibly made by English maker (John Sherwood & Sons).
The love heart is proving to be a bit of a puzzle as well.
I have no idea what the dish/tray would be used for or how old it is.
Hopefully someone can help me.
