Does anybody know what this "tray" is meant for? It is a console stereo without an 8 track although the size of the slots seem to made for 8 tracks. (dimension 22 in long- 4 1/2 in deep and wide and each slot is 1 in wide)

Maybe cassette cases? They are a little over 4" wide .
Correct Answer From Dav2no1..Cassette Tapes..On Their Sides With Artist Lable Facing Up.

Cassette cases didn't fit. it actually narrows towards the bottom.
8 tracks do fit. Must have been added as a feature even though not set up for 8 tracks. could connect one to the system thought. Thanks.
