The early 1970 highball glass tumbler featuring an official gold seal of the president is from a water glass design chosen by First Lady Jackie Kennedy for use in official state occasions in the State Dining Room. This glass tumbler was manufactured and hallmarked with the stamp of the Fostoria Glass Company and used as a rare prototype for the final design proof.
The vice president tumbler features the seal used from 1948 to 1975 and has the hallmark of the Morgantown Glassware Guild stamped on the bottom and is also a rare prototype for the final design proof.
The Guild was bought by the Fostoria Glass Company in 1965, but closed The Guild operations in 1971 making this tumbler pre-1971 and sporting the earlier vice presidential seal that some vice presidents said looked like a 'wounded quail'. Vice President Nelson Rockefeller updated the vice presidential seal in 1975 to a more robust eagle design similar to the presidential eagle, but without the surrounding stars.
The Fostoria Glass Company ceased all operations in 1986 and these proof glasses were rescued from just before being sent to a landfill where most of the business files, prototypes and equipment eventually ended up.
