This is a painting depicting a promotion to a higher government position during the Ming dynasty. It was originally painted in the mid to late 18th century (well after the Ming, so this could be a copy of a copy). This is a painting made from the 18th century original, most likely shortly after the "original" was painted. The painter of this picture was called: (???) Ma Jiaju, whose pseudonym was Shaofeng, (??). The painter who originally painted the 18th century picture was called Ai De (??)?Shichuan (??) was his pseudonym.

Good question. I am not sure as it seems that women wouldn't be involved in any of the ceremony, that being said, I am not overly familiar with the exact examination and promotion process throughout the ages.
